Alex Dove was born November 25, 1970 in Detroit, Michigan. He spent his formative years moving between schools from the east coast to the Midwest with his parents. Before graduating from a small rural school in 1989, he made the winning basketball shot during the Turkey Tournament on his eighteenth birthday.
He graduated four years later from Indiana University. Several years afterward, Alex earned a second bachelor’s degree from DeVry University graduating Summa Cum Laude. He continued on to earn a third degree, a master’s in history, from Eastern Illinois University.
After teaching history as an adjunct professor, Alex strived to make even more of an impact and shifted his focus to writing. That is when he authored his first manuscript, THE LOST DEMIGOD, in the six-book series, THE DEMIGOD CHRONICLES. Since his debut manuscript, Alex has authored seventeen additional manuscripts.
FAQs
How do you pronounce Alex’s last name?
Dove—like the bird or chocolate, and no, Alex’s grandfather is not the founder of Dove soap.
How did Alex become a writer?
Alex was always a curious child and was encouraged by his parents to explore his creativity. In the early 2000s, Alex was the executive producer and founder of Big Imaginations. It was supposed to be a children’s television program but never got off the ground due to funding. So, Alex turned to something that didn’t need green-lighting by anyone else. Writing. He turned his creativity into written words and story.
Where does Alex get his story ideas?
Alex is always thinking about his characters and story plot points. It drives his family crazy when he’s supposed to doing one thing, but really fiddling with his story in the back of his mind. What can he do? He’s a victim of his own ADHD. All kidding aside, Alex pulls his story ideas from his own life’s story—things that have either happened to him or his friends/family—or collects ideas from life around him. Whether he’s sitting at a diner for breakfast, driving his kids to school, or watching his kids play sports, story elements are out there… you just have to look for them.
What authors does Alex admire?
Stephen King, Kevin Hearne, Lee Child, J.K.Rowling, James Patterson, Dean Koontz, among others. He is also an active member in local writing communities around the Chicago area and supports his friends and fellow authors in SCBWI.
What is Alex’s writing process? Does he write every day?
Alex tries to write every day. As a general rule, he tries to write fifteen-hundred good words a day. Sometimes he end up writing much more, other times less. If the moon is aligned with the stars, Alex could write four or six hours in a day, but that’s only if his kids stop pestering him. 🙂

Does Alex have any advice for aspiring writers?
